*Creepy Baby with the phone strikes again!
yes, I will be there!
Excited for the awkwardness of not knowing who is talking and who is responding, it should be fun hearing yals voices π
Ill be there to!!
will be there
Sounds good… I should be there
I should be there too!
I will be there right after I turn my final in at that time.
I’ll be there
Talk to everyone in about an hour!
Just an update for those who didn’t make it for the conference call:
– Guys can wear t-shirts as well as collared shirts. Just no sleeveless shirts (e.g. basketball jerseys).
– Discussed the idea of packing several sets of light cotton clothes and then purchasing additional sets in India as they will be cheap and more suited to the climate.
– Girls need to bring a scarf for their head (in context of going to a service each week at the orphanage, so not sure how often they have to wear it).
– We’ll be living 4 to a room in bunks.
– Tom and I are bringing guitars. Pack any instruments you want to bring.
– Japanese Encephalitis shot is not required.
– The team will be making their own meals for the most part, so we can “Americanize” it as much as needed until used to the food. Also, peanutbutter will be a lunch staple for us over there apparently π
– We are encouraged to bring our laptops, but we will not have access to wireless internet. Once a week we will go to a internet cafe located in a market 15 minutes from our dwelling.
Doing this from memory, so feel free to add anything.
Thanks Andrew, I appreciate you writing out the run-down of the conference call!
One little note about the laptops, or any other real expensive equipment, If you truly don’t need it, I wouldn’t bring it. Unexpected things happen sometimes, like theft, something gets broken, etc…so as far as laptops go, I personally am not bringing one.
On a brighter note, we do have electricity in our “dwelling”. It goes on and off sometimes but we do have power, so ipods, digital cameras, laptops, and stuff can be charged at our home, O Praise Him! Personally I am bringing my ipod nano and my digital camera just to let yal know. π
I wasn’t able to make the conference call but I have a question-what are you all doing about the malaria pills?? Malarone is the recommended medication but even with insurance it costs $400!! That is craaazy. Are most of you getting them anyway? Are you leaders getting them? Is it recommended? Thanks!
Hey Jenna! Malaria pills are highly recommended. I am planning on taking them to be on the safe side, though I know God is my uptmost protection. I used Doxycycline in Swaziland, and my doctor said this Malaria pill could be used in India as well. They may be less expensive. I hope this helps!
Just be carefull which Malaria pill you take. I went to Kenya last year, and the Malarone made me REALLY emotional and depressed so I switched right before I left the country to Cipro! Make sure you talk to your doctor about side effects like that, And make sure you test the medicine before we leave, just in case you need to switch it to a different type!
MALARIA, NOT FUN TO GET!!! Matt called me a couple days ago with the same concern, that the pills are recommended but they are so expensive. Well, first off, the pills are recommended for a reason.
It is a personal choice whether or not you want to get them, but don’t let it be about the money. In this situation, and many more as you all will see this summer, I go to the one who knows best for answers. I suggest asking the Lord, he will not steer you wrong, he will never steer you wrong! Then follow your spirit in making this decision.
IPODS – if there is any confusion, you can bring your ipods BUT the electrical outlets are not the same voltage as they are here in America, so they could be damaged. To aviod this, you can either bring a battery pack, or an outlet converter. I know we can get an outlet converter at the airport, pretty sure, so don’t feel like you need to get one before you come to Georgia for training camp.
yes, that is ok, but I am going to ask you to bring peanut butter too, good question! π
Ah! I definitely bought Nutella yesterday! hehe…although I was at a loss to buy the “spice packs” that is on the “to-bring” list.
haha, straw cowboy hat, yeah, hahah, oh I am chuckling at the site. I love cowboy hats, its just funny because as white Americans, we already stick out like a sore thumb. So honestly, you could totally bring it. Don’t worry about looking weird or goofy, ANY OF YOU, that will be broken within the first week we are there. π I highly recommend bandanas, a black or a blue one.
EVERYBODY SHOULD BRING ATLEAST ONE BANDANA!!!
Sun protective hats are a great Idea though, so thanks Alyson for that comment!
Alyson, Nutella is EXCELLENT, I may even bring some myself if I have room. I brought it to Swaziland, with the only regret being I wished I had packed my whole suitcase full!
I have a question about how much cash everyone is taking. How much should we take?
Hey Krista! I’ve been told several times by poeple who lived/traveled to Delhi that there will be plenty of banks and ATMs there. So I was planning on brinning my debit card and taking out cash as needed. I was also on planning on flying over with around $50-$100 on me. I hope this helps a litte. Anybody else??
Also, I’ve been given a lot more supplies than I can pack into my suitcases. I was talking to a family friend about this, and he asked about taking what I couldn’t pack and mailing it over there instead. He said he would pay for the shipment as a donation. Is this a possiblity… to ship some supplies over there and have it waiting for us when we get there? If so, is there an address I can mail it to?
I was reading the Minsitry Supply List and it said we need a black skirt for drama, does it need to be ankle length skirt?
Laura: yes, the drama/drime skirt needs to be ankle length as well. I know it is hard to find skirts that are ankle length (especially if you are tall), let alone a specific color. If worse comes to worse the whole team can’t participate in a drime at the same time, so you should be able to borrow one. However, it would be best to stay on the safe side. Hope that helps!
Kyle: that is very kind of your family friend but I am afraid that won’t work out. It would take too long to ship over there, and it is really expensive. Also, our address is not specific enough where we live to have packages sent there.
EVERYONE – I just started packing last night, I made a specific packing list so I wouldn’t take too much, and also, so I wouldn’t forget anything in the moment of packing. I would suggest that everyone do this so you all can fit everything you need, both personally and ministry supplies! π I am going to post my personal packing list on this blog so yal can see it.

What will we be doing at camp? I dont know how to pack for it!
Hi Laura,
The camp itinerary is in the Real Life Ministries handbook on the adventures homepage. I think we will be doing a number of activities to bond as a team and learn whatever we can to get ready for our trip (like the drama skits we will be performing). We’ll be camping out to get ready for India, so bring some clothes that you aren’t afraid will get dirty (shirts and bball shorts)because I have heard that there is a lot of red clay where we will be settling in Georgia. I hope this helps, if anyone has anything to add, go for it!
Hello All,
I must say that I have been reading all your blogs over again and you all are just very cool people. I consider it an honor to come and serve beside each one of you as we serve the God-man, Jesus. Blessings to each one of you during this last week of preparation for the trip.
Alyson:
That’s awesome you were given so many supplies. However, the reason they ask everyone to bring one bag just for ministry supplies is that we take all the supplies out at training camp and redistribute them according to categories. That way we know that they all have to fit. So its best to keep it to one bag, and leave at home items you think might not be as needed to stay under 50lbs.
I do believe we will have milk while we are over there, however, I don’t think it will be near the amount we are used to here in the US. It wouldn’t hurt to bring some if you have the room.
Laura:
At training camp we will be outside a lot, doing team builders and stuff. So make sure to have tennis shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Also, the weather says Gainesville is going to be hot, so T-shirts, capris, and shorts would be good. There will be an opportunity to donate items at the end of training camp that you don’t want to take to India.
Hey Guys, I hope the packing rush is going well. I have a couple tips/suggestions for you. GARLIC PILLS, on my last team a lot of people took them daily to prevent mosquitoes from biting, I believe they helped. And second SPACE BAGS, these little plastic wonders can help with the room situation in your suitcase if you are getting close.
YES thanks for the reminder!!!
Is anyone planning on bringing an air pump (for soccer balls, etc.)? I have many soccer balls that I can bring and need to know if I need to get a pump or if someone already has that taken care of. Thanks!
I saw the extended packing list said to bring a bowl, plate, and coffee mug. Are those necessary?
Hey Tom, thanks for your list! You didn’t put a tie on there either. Is that supposed to be on there?
Also, you listed brown dress shoes. I’m assuming to wear with khakis. I was planning on just wearing some plain white Toms, (slip on, canvas shoes). Is that a problem? Do I need to bring some shoes that aren’t so casual?
Addingto the packing list, I bringing a personal battery operated fan that I bought at Wal-Mart, that should help with the heat in Inida. Ive used it while camping and it works WONDERS!
Hey Matt, I have an air pump that I’m planning on bringing, I just only have one needle. So as long as that doesn’t bend or break then it should be good for all the balls π
Hey so I’m just finishing up packing and I have next to no “ministry supplies”. I am still bringing a practically empty bag, so if some of you are feeling overwhelmed with stuff, I have tons of space.
I got a lot of extra stuff too… We’ll definitely get you filled up!!
I was wondering if we can bring some alternatives to peanut butter, like Nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread), for when we start to get tired of the taste of peanut butter. Personally, I LOVE NUTELLA and would love to make nutella sandwiches.
Great! I will bring nutella and pb. One more question what kind of hat do you suggest we bring? I have a straw cowboy-type hat that would be great for keeping out the sun, but I’m afraid it would look strange in New Delhi. What do you recommend?
Thanks for the updated list. I also have an overabundance of ministry supplies. I weighed my ministry supply bag and it was 60 pounds! Is it okay if I put some of those in my personal bag, or was there a particular reason why we were asked to bring a bag for ministry supplies and a separate bag for personal items? Also, do you know if we will be able to drink milk while we are there? I would like to know because I will bring calcium pills if it’s not available. Thanks!
Tom I noticed that you don’t have ziplocks on your list. I saw on the extensive packing list that we need 2 boxes of gallon sized and 1 box of small sized ziplocks. Do we not really need these? Let me know, because they’re taking a lot of room in my suitcase, and I’ll ditch them if they’re not needed. Thanks!
Also, would a Christian CD be a good gift for an adult?
Great! I’ll bring a lot of my extra supplies and put them in your bag! Thanks for letting me know!
